User guide
Step by step with screenshots: roster, game settings, line changes, lock screen, archive and sharing with an assistant coach.
Getting started
The app follows the language on your iPhone (English, Norwegian or Swedish). Button names below are as they appear in English.
- Add your players to the roster, with jersey numbers if you like, and choose the goalie.
- Open Game settings and pick the rules and an age group. The rules are filled in, and you can change them afterwards.
- Tick off who is here today, and choose who starts.
- Tap Start game. When it’s time to change lines, the app tells you and shows who goes on and off. Tap Change now.
- When the game is over, tap Stop and save game. It is then saved in Archive.
Want to try it first? Choose Try a demo game in the introduction, or under the question mark on the setup screen. The demo game is not saved.
Frequently asked questions
How do I choose who changes myself?
Tap a player during the game. You can then choose On at next change or Off at next change, or change right away. Otherwise the app decides: with Fair rotation, the player with the least playing time goes on and the one with the most comes off.
A player got injured. What do I do?
Tap the player on the ice and choose Injured – bring on from the bench. The next player on the bench goes on right away. If the player won’t play any more, choose Remove from game. The player moves to Out of the game and can be brought back with Bring back.
Can I change lines without unlocking my phone?
Yes. During a game, the clock and the next change show on the lock screen and in the Dynamic Island, with its own Change now button. If you don’t see it, check that Live Activities are turned on for HockeySub in the iPhone Settings app.
I get no sound or vibration when it’s time to change.
Check that Sound at changes is on in game settings, that your phone is not on silent, and that notifications are allowed for HockeySub in Settings > Notifications.
Should the clock stop when it’s time to change?
You decide. With Stop the clock at changes, the clock stands still until you tap Change now, as in Norwegian U7–U9 games with stop time. Otherwise the clock keeps running during the change.
What happens if the app closes during a game?
The game continues where it left off when you open the app again.
Can I correct a game afterwards?
Yes. Open the game in Archive and choose Edit. There you can change goals and each player’s playing time.
How do I share games as a PDF?
Open a game in Archive and choose Share as PDF. To share several games at once, choose Select games to share in the archive menu. Season stats can also be shared as a PDF. One game is free, while several games at once and season stats need HockeySub Pro.
How do I share my team with an assistant coach?
Tap the team button at the top of the setup screen, choose Manage teams and go to Share with assistant coach. Tap Share team, choose Share link via iCloud and send the link in Messages, by email or wherever you like. When the assistant coach taps the link, the team appears in the app, and from then on the roster and archive sync automatically between you. Attendance and game settings stay your own. Under Who has access you can see who the team is shared with and stop sharing. Anyone who gets the link can join and edit the team, so only send it to the people who should have it. If your assistant coach doesn’t use iCloud, choose Send as file instead. The roster, archive and game settings are then sent as a file the assistant coach opens in HockeySub. Share link via iCloud needs HockeySub Pro for the coach who shares. Send as file is free.
Can I have several teams?
Yes. Tap the team button at the top of the setup screen to switch teams, or choose Manage teams to add, rename or delete teams. Each team has its own roster, game settings and archive. Your first team is free. A second team and more need HockeySub Pro.
What is HockeySub Pro?
A one-time purchase of 79 kr (NOK), with no subscription. Pro gives you several teams, season stats, sharing several games as one PDF and iCloud sync with assistant coaches. Everything you need during a game is free. Pro supports Family Sharing. Read more in the user guide.
I bought Pro, but it’s locked on my new phone.
Open the Pro screen, for example from the question mark on the setup screen, and tap Restore purchase. Make sure you’re signed in with the same Apple ID you bought with. You won’t pay again.
Does my assistant coach need to buy Pro too?
No. Only you, as the one who shares with Share link via iCloud, need Pro. The assistant coach joins for free. Send as file is free for everyone.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. Everything is stored only on your phone. Read more in the privacy policy.
Can I use the app in another language?
Yes. The app is in English, Norwegian and Swedish, and follows the language on your iPhone. To use another language just in HockeySub, open the Settings app, tap Apps, then HockeySub, and pick a language under Language. The rules follow the language when you create a new team (Norwegian gives NIHF, Swedish gives Sweden, other languages give IIHF). You can switch rules under Game settings, including to Canada.
